4 Ways to Prepare for School after the Summer Holidays

With September around the corner, you’re probably starting to think about the new school term ahead. After six long weeks of never-ending summer days, late nights and endless playtime, a little routine can provide a warm welcome to those higgledy-piggledy days. It might feel a little overwhelming to think of all the things you may need to prepare to et them ready for the new school year, but with a little planning, you can help beat those back-to-school worries.

We’ve put together a list of tips to help you and the kids get back into the swing of things. From preparing their stationery kit to getting your planner organized, there are lots of ways to make the transition into the new school term feel a little easier.

Getting back into routine

Late nights and lay-ins sound familiar? With the long summer days and lack of routine, it can be a challenge to stick to bedtimes (and your alarm) during the summer holidays. Even in the autumn term, the evenings and mornings can still be light, making getting to bed on time a little difficult. It’s worth investing in a good blackout blind to help you and your little ones get a good night’s sleep and to ensure you both feel refreshed for the day ahead.

A blackout blind doesn’t have to mean dark in colour and totally plain; we’ve got a wide variety of playful, kid-friendly designs to slot perfectly into their room. Find their favourite Disney characters, fun prints and even special glow-in-the-dark designs to help them settle in for the night.

Kit them out with new school supplies

The new school year is the ideal opportunity to make a fresh start and renew their school kit. By shopping for supplies together and giving them choice over what to buy, you can help to get your kids get excited and prepared for their first day.

Start by checking their kit from last year to see what can be transitioned into the new term and what needs replacing. Then, make a list with your little one of everything you need before you go shopping. Here’s a checklist of some things to consider:

-      Pens, pencils and highlighters

-      Rubber

-      Ruler

-      Sharpener

-      Compass and protractor

-      Calculator

-      Ring binder or pocket folder

-      USB drive

-      Pencil case

-      Backpack

-      Lunchbox

-      Gym kit

These are just some of the things you might want to add to your shopping list. It might also be worth checking your home supplies to ensure they can complete their homework successfully. For example, you could stock up on printer ink, paper, glue sticks, scissors, notebooks and paints.

Swap the TV for books

If the summer holidays have been full of video games, TV and little reading time, getting the kids back into the habit of learning and concentrating will help them prepare for their lessons. As September approaches, it’s worth reigning in screen time and getting the kids engaged in other sources of entertainment like reading, writing and creative pursuits such as painting or crafts.

It could also involve trips to museums, zoos or historical sights to help fuel their curiosity and keep them engaged.

Get organised and create a planner

With lots of term dates, school trips and parent evenings, it can sometimes feel like there are endless things to remember once the new school year starts. The best way to tackle it all is to get organised and create a planner for you and your children to see on a daily basis. A great way to do this is by hanging a calendar in the kitchen and noting down all the important dates.

A planner can also be a useful tool to keep track of meal plans and lunches as you and your family get back into routine, as well as any extra-circular activities your kids might be taking on in the new school term.
