Decluttering Your Home: 8 Tips for Organising Your Living Space

Have you ever looked at the inspirational interior snaps and thought, my house will never look like this because of all the stuff I have? We have all been there.

Don’t worry, we have a few storage solutions for your home to beat any envious interior snaps.

How to Start Organising Your Home

There’s no better time to declutter your home than after Christmas. First, you have to put all winter gear away anyhow, so why not do it all at once. Second, if you decided to become a new person this year, start with your home.

Successful lifestyle begins with an organised home.

Start by revising your wardrobe and storage. Get rid of useless stuff in your home; whether it’s expired food or beauty products, toys your kids have outgrown or old home accessories and clothes.

If the item has a monetary value, sell it. If you have a sentimental attachment to it and REALLY want to keep it, create one storage box for all this stuff, to keep it tidy.

1.     Make Organising Fun for Your Kids

You can’t prevent your kids from playing, so why not teach them to clean up afterwards instead? Tidying shouldn’t be boring, especially if you teach your kids to do it. Get fun storage boxes and containers and turn tidying up into a game or competition, and remember about the rewards.

Put kids’ toys, and books in places accessible for them, so that they can easily use and put them back whenever they want.

P.S. The tidier your kids are, the less time you’ll have to spend cleaning after them.

2.     Put Things in Predictable Places

If you struggle to take your hairdryer out of the cupboard every single time you need to use it, perhaps it’s a sign to move it somewhere more convenient. The same applies to seasonal clothes, home accessories, kids’ toys and other things.

Put frequently used items in easily accessible places and organise your wardrobe, storage and cupboards accordingly. Similarly, use hard to reach shelves and places to store not often used or non-seasonal items.

3.     Use Clear Containers and Storage

Clear containers and storage boxes are extremely helpful when it comes to organising your storage. Use glass jars for condiments, plastic boxes or vacuum storage bags for clothing. It’s a great solution to have everything in front of you when you need it.

Alternatively, you can group your items into boxes and use sticky labels to write box contents or name them accordingly. For example, winter jumpers, Christmas decorations, summer shoes etc.

“For every minute spent in organising, an hour is earned.” (Benjamin Franklin)

4.     Make the Most of Every Available Space

One of the tricks to creating a minimal-like interior is storing your stuff in hidden places. Make the most of the space under a bed, stairways, tables, sink area and walls. There is so much space for you to store your suitcases, unseasonal clothes, additional bedding without exposing them to your guests.

The internet is full of ideas for every size of living, so browse to get inspired.

5.     Sort Your Closet

Want to spend less time getting ready in the mornings? Hang your tops separate from your bottoms. This hack will help you to prepare your daily outfits in your head before pulling them out of your wardrobe.

The same applies when it comes to cooking. Store your baking ingredients separate from savoury dish seasonings. Whatever it might be, keeping things separately will help you to be more organised and save time when preparing.

6 .    Invest in Storage Only After Your Stuff Are Sorted

Stylish storage boxes aren’t a solution for your home organisation if your things aren’t sorted first. Before purchasing colourful and stylish boxes – first sort all your items. Organise all items in piles neatly or put them in plastic bags. Organising first will help you to see how many and what size storage boxes you need, and what things you’ll need them for.

7.     Be Brutal

We all have a few books that have been collecting dust on our shelf for a couple of years now. Or a stunning dress you have purchased on sale, and haven’t worn it ever since. Whatever it is, don’t be afraid to let go of things you don’t use. Be honest with yourself, if there is something you haven’t used for ages, most likely you will never use it. So, pass these things to someone who’ll make better use of them.

8.     Declutter Regularly

Keep your home organised and tidy. Do seasonal wardrobe revisions to avoid overfilling your wardrobe. Circulate your clothes – once the cold months are over, put knitted jumpers and cardigans away and move spring clothes to easily accessible shelves.

When decluttering your home. Create a “pending box” and put all things you haven’t used for a while, but don’t want to throw away there. If you haven’t taken them out of the box for 6 or 12 months - they’re ready for charity or as a gift to someone.

Invest time in organising your home now, and you’ll thank yourself later.

Don’t Have Much Time?

Dedicate 10 to 30 minutes every day, or a couple of hours a month to clear out your living space. Put on some upbeat music, prepare nice brew or a snack to help you get started.

Decluttering not only helps to tidy your home but also helps you to clear your mind and get distractions out of your way.
