Announcing the winners of our student design competition

After days of judging, we’ve now got three winners of our student design competition – “Motif: Pattern Design”. The main aim of the competition was to design a pattern that will be available for purchase as a roller blind from Swift Direct Blinds. We asked students studying Textile or Design related courses to submit their designs.

It was hard to make a decision choosing from all the great work submitted. The quality of designs was very high. We are proud of every single student who participated.

This year’s competition is our first of a kind but it proved to be a success. We received forty entries from many universities across the UK.

We are delighted to announce the winners. Below are their designs and statements.

First Prize

Esther Lowles - Norwich University of the Arts

Esther Lowles

Design Statement: This Brush Stroke design is inspired by the Danish word 'Hygge'. The word means cosiness and is often linked with the idea of taking joy and finding comfort in the everyday. This theme sits perfectly within interiors and promotes wellbeing in the home environment. The soft and handmade touch to this design links seamlessly with the themes of 'Hygge'. The physiological properties of colour have also been considered within the design. Navy = trust, serenity, coolness, reflection, calm. Warm Grey = calm, clean, sophisticated. Overall the design aims to promote a positive and comforting home environment whilst also bringing a creative accent to the home.

Second Prize

Alison Wilson - University of Derby

Design Statement: The Passage of Time. Clocks are not only a measure of time but also a marker of time, often being given commemoratively or passed down through generations. This design is part of a collection that forms my 3rd year work and involves a collection of family time pieces. This particular design is based around my daughters alarm clocks. I have tried to keep the collection contemporary and fun.

Third Prize

Katie Gilbert - University of Derby

Design Statement: This design has been inspired by sea shells. To create it, I have stitched into a sheet of acetate, creating a spiral-shaped shell illustration. I then photocopied the design and took a section of it, which was then turned into a repeat. Originally, the colours of the thread were contrasting, which included colours such as light blue and bright red. I liked the contrast of the colours, because they allow the detail to stand out. However, the blue and red do not look right together, so I decided to use purple and peach. I have used these colours specifically because they are opposites on the colour wheel, which means that they will complement one another. Additionally, I have chosen this colour combination because the colours are quite light. They allow a room to look large, whereas darker colours can make a room look smaller, which is not always ideal is the room is already quite small.

On top of cash prizes, the winners will have their designs coming to life on roller blinds and available on our website in the nearest future. We would like to thank everyone who participated in the competition. Also, we acknowledge great work of all lecturers who encouraged their students to enter designs.
