Choosing the Perfect Colour Scheme for Your Home

How to choose a colour scheme for your living space

Have you just moved into your first home? Perhaps you’ve been in your house for a while and want to redecorate? If the only thing you know at this point is that you want to revamp the current colour scheme, it can be tricky knowing where to begin.

There is a lot to consider before you commit to a colour, from finding tones that complement each other to ensuring you’re creating a space that you can happily live in. To help you select a palette that works for you, here are some questions to consider.

What room are you decorating?

To begin planning your colour palette, it’s worth considering the room you are focusing on. The intensity of the hue you opt for can impact on the atmosphere. This is because colour can affect our mood.

If you’re updating your living room or kitchen, for example, these are often lively environments where family and friends gather. Therefore, brighter colours are well suited to these rooms as they can reflect the energy of the space and lift the mood.

Bedrooms, on the other hand, are more likely to require soothing shades. Gentle blues and soft purples can be ideal for making the room relaxing.

Are you creating cohesion?

While decorating your home with different colours in each room can work well and reflect the mood of the space, another important point to consider when creating your colour palette is whether you are creating a connection between the rooms.

Picking out one colour and using this as a theme is a good approach to forming the basis of your scheme as this one colour can create cohesion throughout your home.

One simple way to do this is by allowing accessories to highlight the colour you have selected to bring everything together. In rooms where you are keeping walls free of the main colour, you can use throws, cushions and window dressings to hint at it. We make it easy to shop for the shade you want when you choose the relevant colour filter for your blinds and curtains.

Do you want to follow the trends?

Another key influence on your scheme might be what’s currently in fashion. This can be a great jumping off point for creating the basis for your palette.

Whether you want to go with Pantone’s colour trends – the colour brand predicts sea greens and deep blues will be big in 2020 – or you want to use a shade that you’ve seen in one of our trends guides, you can use these tones to begin pulling your colour scheme together with complementary hues.

If there are any colours that are on trend that you think might work well in your home, it’s worth testing them in patches on walls to see if they’re a good fit. If the colour is too much for the walls, it
might work better on window blinds or shutters.

What’s your favourite colour?

The palette you choose doesn’t have to use trending colours. Do you have a colour that you always come back to? If you have always liked yellow or you long to add a splash of blue, it’s easy to incorporate your favourite shade in a vibrant, contemporary way.

To do this, you can take your preferred colour and team it with neutrals. Balancing out the dominant colour that you love with greys or creams can allow the central colour to come through without it being too much.

The choice is yours

Ultimately, the colours you use should make you happy. You are living in the space and the scheme you create needs to be something you can enjoy spending time in.
